How Thailand snatched Henrique Calisto from under the noses of Vietnam?

Thailand once won successfully in the race convincing Henrique Calisto to leave Vietnam thanked to the financial power of the team Dang Van Lam is part of – Muangthong United.

The press recently keeps posting the news that Thailand football had been among those rumored to be interested in securing Park Hang-seo regardless of the denial of the Thai biggest newspapers.

In 2011, Muangthong United – the reigning of Thai League back then, was succeed in acquiring services of Henrique Calisto who at that time had been the most successful coach of Vietnamese football by bringing Vietnam to touch 2008 AFF Cup title and securing Vietnam a slot in 2009 SEA Games Finals and 2010 AFF Cup semi-finals.

Henrique Calisto left Vietnam on 2nd March, 2011 to step up at Muangthong with a lucrative salary which was 10.000 USD higher than in Vietnam.

This year was also the Golden Age of Muangthong United when reaching 2 Thai League trophies consecutively. With Henrique Calisto standing as the head coach amidst the team-sheet, Muangthong United was nurturing a desire to head into international arena which specifically was AFC Champions League.

Henrique Calisto, however, could not preserve his post for long when being sacked immediately due to dropping off Thai League title for the first time in three years in charge.

Few days ago, Muangthong United splashed 20 million baht to ask Alexander Gama for stepping down as U23 Thailand head coach, which seemed a recognizable action of the very team.

After taking a bitter outcome with Muangthong, Calisto returned to Portugal leading a small local team before officially retiring. The biggest outing in his coaching career was the period coaching Vietnam NT and Dong Tam Long An FC.
