Thai newspaper: 'All want to postpone AFF Cup 2020 except Vietnam'
Recently, Thai media revealed that except for Vietnam, most of the teams agreed to postpone AFF Cup 2020.
Siamsports newspaper of Thailand revealed: "At a recent meeting, members of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) expressed concern about the outbreak of Covid-19. It was suggested that the tournament should be be postponed, move to next year.
However, VFF representative Tran Quoc Tuan did not agree with this proposal, as Mr. Tuan said that in 2021 the schedule was also very dense, including the World Cup 2022 qualifier, U17 tournament and U20 world cup.”
The AFF Cup 2020 is expected to be held from November 23 to December 31. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers have left the possibility that the tournament will take place as planned.
Currently, all football competitions in Southeast Asia are pending and not scheduled to return. Even the V-League 2020 recently had to pause after coming back and took place for 9 rounds, because the COVID-19 pandemic is showing signs of outbreak again.
Not only the league but also the continental tournaments such as AFC Cup, AFC Champions League or 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Asia have been affected and have to postpone the schedule by the end of this year.
Siamsport newspaper also said that the fate of the AFF Cup 2020 will be decided on July 30: "The final decision regarding the AFF Cup 2020, whether organized according to the old calendar or not, will be discussed among AFF members on July 30."
Currently, Vietnam is the defending champion of the AFF Cup after defeating Malaysia in the final two years ago. Coach Park Hang-seo and Vietnam NT are very determined to protect this victory at the AFF Cup 2020.
